[NI0418] He was born on a farm outside of Waterloo, IA which today is in the
eastside of the town, fully grown. His father left and his mother married
Frank Cole who raised him. While in his early teens his father had him
driving a concelled booze truck during probation. With his mother's
signature entered the Navy while still in his teens. Information is not
specific but two ledgers exist from his Navy days. These ledgers list
ports he entered and is full of dance cards primarily from Japan. While
still in the Navy while on leave he asked Invalene to marry him and they
married shortly after he got out of the service. In the beginning they
were poor and he had a number of jobs. Tells of being fired from John
Deere the first time hitting the supervisor with a shovel. During his 37
years a Deere's he left a couple of times to sell encycolapedia and
cookware. Was a district manager and made very good money but was on the
road alot. Ended up going back to Deere's to have a more stable life.
After he initially retired from Deere's parked himself in front of the TV
and watched soap operas. At some point he got involved with the Moose
Lodge and that was his central point in his life until he died. Best known for
his seven car garage and having every tool in the world which his friends would
barrow and never return. Next would be his basement with fully stocked
bar, pool table and his cigarette lighter collection. He was a hard man
but was a good teacher in his own way. Always said it took him three wives to
have a girl and it did. Second wife, Quedia, was what he would call a paid baby
sitter which he did pay dearly for in the long run. Only lasted 4-5 years. When
he died, of everything, he willed his body to the University of Iowa for
medical research. They returned it a year later which shocked everyone.

TRIPLETT BIBLE (Transcribed by Elizabeth Martin Edward Triplett w. of Edward A. Triplett from the family bible in the posession of Henry Frank Triplett of Elkins, WV about 1950.) "John Triplett and a man by the name of Kelly settled on what was known at the time as Kelly Mountain. John was the son of Simon Triplett. Simon's brothers were Francis, William & James according to the info that Frank Triplett of Elkins, WV had acquired. He was told that these 4 brothers came from England but had no date. He was also told that Randolph Triplett had tried years ago to tie this branch with the rest of the Tripletts but could not.

[NI0787] He was raised in Waterloo until he was in his mid-teens when he decided he would go live with his mother in Peoria. Lee was inducted in the Army and spent the majority of his two year tour in Germany. Earned spare money shooting pool. He always worked in the retail business first as a shoe salesman and later changed to a leading department store in Peoria where he worked his way up to buyer and floor manager making trips for the company. Lee was very sports oriented which involved his two sons. Always good for a game of basketball or a trip to a ball game of any kind. Die hard Yankee fan.

Eva Belle Triplett

Posted by Sam Hallows on Wed, 23 Aug 20000

Surname: KITTLE, TRIPLETT, WILMOTH

The Girl on the Golden Horse
The horse was golden in color and so were the tresses of the little girl as they flashed by my baby eyes like a streak. That is my first memory of our subject. The horse with the little girl upon his back was always running, but the little girl could run alone and she did.
Eva Belle Triplett was born in a little West Virginia village called New Interest. It lay in a green and lush valley where farming was the principal pursuit of its people. The two families into which she came were closely knit by race, creed and cultures.
Her paternal grandfather, John Randolph Triplett, moved into West Virginia from Baltimore, Maryland, where it had become too crowded to suit his expansive nature. His wife, Sarah Kittle, was a woman of great heart and mind. She nursed the sick and comforted those in distress in her nieghborhood. Inclined to be studious, she raised her children to be students. Eva's father, Floyd John Triplett, was her eldest child. He began his college work through extension courses from the University of West Virginia. When he became qualified, he taught school for a short time in early manhood.
He married another school teacher, Ella May Wilmoth, a tall red haired girl who had attended the Female College in Wheeling, West Virginia.
This was a strong, ambitious young couple. Shortly after Eva's birth they moved to another location where the Western Maryland Railroad was beginning an expansion program. There her father built the first buildings in the place that is now known as Elkins, (Randolph Co.) West Virginia and here he began his lifetime career as newspaper editor and publisher.
Eva was a storehouse of energy. When she was about twelve years old, her uncle, Alonzo Francis Wilmoth, had a beautiful saddle made for her. Even tho' she was virtually born on horseback, he felt it time she began to learn to ride like a lady. But her horseback riding days were brought sharply to a close when her father accepted an offer to join the staff of the Pittsburgh Post.
Eva entered into the life of Pittsburgh with eagerness to know the breadth and depth of all of its phases. When she left it a few years ago, her life had been enriched by the opportunities offered at the many progressive institutions of the City.
She attended Pittsburgh Central High School, located almost in the heart of the City. At that time it was the responsibility of the high schools to prepare and provide teachers for the County schools. When Eva was graduated she set out to find a teaching position. This took her to McKees Rocks, then to a place called Carnot. After that she taught in Penn Township and from there she went to North Braddock, where she taught until retirement.
That was not the extent of Eva's teaching. When Pittsburgh was flooded with immigrants from other lands a call went out for teachers to help to Americanize these hordes. She volunteered and thus stretched her teaching day well into the night. During many summers she taught at the Home for Crippled Children and at the Gumbert School for Delinquent Girls. She spent summers selling real estate in Michigan, a summer or two at Chautauqua Lake and one or two at Deer Park, Maryland.
Along with teaching and other activities she earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree at Duquesne University and a Masters of Arts Degree at the University of Pittsburgh. She studied piano and musical composition at the Pittsburgh Musical Institute and took some ballet dancing. One summer she studied at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.
I remember that she was a golf enthusiast for a while, but her great love was for music, the opera and for the great plays of the theater. She had little money to spend and she made it stretch by attending the theater only when great productions came to Pittsburgh. Then she puchased balcony seats and from them she saw most of the great operas and most of the great actors of our day. For her to be unable to attend a Shakespearian or Ibsonian play was an earth shaking tragedy.
She spent a year on the continent of Europe studying the antiquities of our Western civilization. Her great ambition is to return again to Rome.

From A HISTORY OF RANDOLPH COUNTY WEST VIRGINIA by Dr. A. S. Bosworth, page 156; Remarkable Recoveries. "On the night of March 20, 1864, a squad of Confederate scouts, consisting of Adam C. Stalnaker, Jasper Triplett, Oliver Triplett, Anthony Triplett, Taylor Chenoweth, James D. Wilson, Jacob Wilmoth, Luther Parsons, Lafe Ward and Dow Adams were fired upon by thirty-three Home Guards known as Swamps, while they were sleeping before a campfire at the Sinks on the head of Dry Forks. Oliver Triplett was killed instantly. Anthony Triplett and Adams were so severely wounded that they were thought to be dead. However, upon the removal of their boots they showed signs of life and were clubbed with muskets and left for dead. Later they regained consciousness and Adams, in a dazed condition, fell into the fire and was severely burned. Mr. Teter, who lived near, found the wounded men the next day and cared for them as his house. Adams had been hit by eighteen missiles, yet both he and Triplett recovered. Those escaping injury fled to the adjacent woods. Messrs James D. Wilson and Adam C. Stalnaker, having departed the camp without their shoes, wrapped their feet in the capes pf their coats, tied them on with their handkerchiefs, and waded through the snow several feet deep to Hightown, eight miles distance. Messrs. Perry Weese, John and Eli Taylor were with the Confederate scouts, but Mr Weese stopped for the night with a Mr. Teter, who lived near. He was surprised and captured before the soldiers at the camp were fired upon, but was helpless to warn his comrades. Messrs. John and Eli Taylor, fearing a night attack, did not remain with the main body of the scouts, but were passing the night about a half mile distant, when the discharge of muskets warned them of their danger. They made their escape. Mr. Weese was turned over to the Federal authorities and sent to Camp Chase, where he remained until the close of the war. These Confederates were returning from a visit to their homes in this section. They also designed to surprise and capture the Federal wagon train of supplies on its way from Webster Station to Beverly. Preparation was made for the attack a few miles below Beverly, but when the train appeared the guard was too strong for their small force and their object was abandoned.

John Andrew Taylor was a first cousin to Eli Taylor. Eli's father Isaac Jr. was a younger brother to John Andrew's father John Taylor. John Andrew Taylor was married to Louisa Dyre Ward in 1858, relationship to Lafe Ward unknown.

Jasper and Oliver Triplett were brothers and the nephews of Eunice Triplett Taylor and first cousins to Eli Taylor, son of Isaac Taylor Jr. and Eunice Triplett Taylor.

Anthony Triplett was a younger, half brother to Eunice Triplett Taylor and uncle to Levi Taylor, EuniceTriplett Taylor's son.

THE LAST RIDE OF MARVIN P. TAYLOR, Memorial Eulogy by Steven Hites, 14 February 1998, Presbyterian Church, Skagway, Alaska

Twas a bitter day in winter
the rails were mantled white
deep lay the snow at the Summit
for our railroad boys to fight.

When one among our brave ones
was finally taken ill
It was his last time to blow the whistle
and his last trip Up the Hill

He'd been the GM and the Super
his job? The trains to run
In a blockade, "Where's the Rotary,
and the 70 and 71?'

In heaven he's calmly resting
free from all toil and care
At home with his crew forever
there are no train orders there

Now boys, that our friend has left us
to a better place, peaceful and free
Before leaving the yards at Skagway
let's get a clearance, signed "MPT".
