FROM YOUR PASTOR -
While I was tutoring last Tuesday, Mrs. Tapia showed me a new book she had discovered. It was a book that focuses on metacognition. Literally metacognition is “thinking about thinking.” In the context of a class of first grade level readers, it’s thinking about reading. She explained it to the students this way: she read a passage from a book. She asked the children if she could read without understanding. Yes, they agreed. Had they ever done that. Yes, they admitted that they had. The secret to reading she revealed to them was for their brains to think about what they were reading
It seems to me that sums up our relationship to the faith. We can hear the truths of the Christian faith over and over and they don’t really sink in. We can read scripture and even if we understand it, it doesn’t always understand it. As a friend on Facebook says, “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. (---Psalm 119:11) I just wish that I didn't hide it so good that I can't remember it at times!!!” As we listen to scripture in this Lenten season and walk the discipline of Lent, it’s an opportunity to listen, to really hear and apply what God is saying in our lives.
Remember the words of the Psalmist this week and seek metacognition.
Christ’s Peace,
Pastor Kim
