"Trained as an art historian, Geoffrey's non-commissioned work alludes to many paintings in the classical tradition. Common to both the portraits of dogs and to the tapestry or blanket series is Landis' love of textiles. The subject of many of these textile paintings are blankets, those from the Native American tradition, Navajo textiles, and also the Hispanic tradition in weaving, the Rio Grande blankets. Striking and as familiar as the Navajo tradition is to our modern eye, the subtle tones and sometimes softer contrasts of the Rio Grande blankets, Landis feels better reflect the many nuanced colors and shapes of the southwestern landscape.

Whereas the dog portraits are personal and immediate, the blanket series appeals to a wide range of individuals. They seem to capture the whimsy of momentary flight and to many their folds suggest other forms reiterating the landscape and the human figure. Even while appearing to be airborne, these paintings convey a sense of gravity and calm. These paintings, meticulously layered with many fine veils of color, create a depth to the eye that recalls the fine painting traditions before our modern era. So many of the titles of these paintings allude to earlier masters, the artists from whom Landis learned both technique and the dynamism of composition and structure.

The blanket paintings are at home in the most contemporary setting and in more traditional environments."
