Christine (1982)
I remember when Christine came out, the reviews talked about how -
peripherally - the movie also was an extraordinary slice of life about
high school, how accurately, almost as a side note, the movie depicted
high school life.
Christine is also a horror movie, and - also - a movie about obsession.
It shows psychologically how and when people get too consumed in
something, how it overtakes them, transforms them. It is by far a
more interesting psychological study than any mere horror film. Besides,
a horror film is usually about an organic creature chasing down and
terrorizing people. That this movie is about a car makes it different,
gives it a different, otherworldly, other feel. It is not a conventional
movie.
John Carpenter's Christine is unique in this sense.
It also, in my eyes, with the suspense and fear element removed, is a far
better 'American Graffiti' than American
Graffiti was. Shame on you George Lucas, and ten points to
Gryffindor John Carpenter.
