The results are in! I have heard back from the judges of the poetry contest as well as the national poetry competition! We have quite a few winners from Salam Academy and we would love for you to join us for an hour of amazing poetry and celebration of words!

- What: We will listen to wonderful, lovely and sometimes silly poems by our students, as well as announce the winners for the school competition!

Attention Students and Teachers:
The fall poetry contest is here! Poetry is a great way to
express yourself, stretch your mind and play with the English
Language. So, write a poem! The poems can be written in any
style-rhymed or unrhymed. Please try your best and get writing!

Prizes will be awarded to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners in each grade
as well as being submitted to Creative Communication as a national
contest. For the Creative Communication (national competition) the top
ten entries in each grade division will receive a $50 savings bond, special
recognition in the book and a free copy of the anthology that is created
from the contest.

SALAM ACADEMY POETRY
WRITING COMPETITION
GUIDELINES AND RULES

- Poems must be the original work of the student
- Poems can be on any appropriate topic (no pro-violence, drugs, etc.)
- Poems must be in English
- Poems must not be over 21 lines of text
- Entries are open to Salam Academy children grades K-8
- Teachers are expected to lead their students through the writing process in order to produce top-quality poems
- Work is to be done in class only
- One winner will be chosen from each grade level and then a 1st and 2nd place
- winner will be chosen for each Grade-Level Division
- Entries will be judged using a Writing Rubric that will be given to teachers in advance.
- Entry is limited to one poems per student.
- Poems should be suitable for children ages 5 to 14 years old
- All poems must be original. Plagiarized stories will be disqualified
- Entries for 3-8 grades must be typed using 12 point Times New Roman font, with a 1 inch margin around all sides. Do not double space.
- Entries for K-2 must be handwritten and include an illustration, illustrations are welcome but not mandatory for grades 3-8
- Winning stories will be published on the school website and if possible, entered into national competitions.
- Entries must include a cover sheet or title page with the title of the poem, full name of the author, grade level, school name, month, year and the student’s age.
- Teachers, please include one paragraph describing your classes writing process as well as what you emphasized during class in relation to this contest.
- When submitting the poems, please put them in a folder and label the folder with your name, email and class.
- Please submit two copies of each poem along with the title page.
