Star Trek New Voyages Pilot episode The music's all off ... what the hell? Why can't they structure this like a Star Trek episode? It's not hard. It was very simplistic, had a very definite structure. What was it about the 1960's, about television as a (relatively) early medium ... did things not progress as fast as they do now? Is our fast progression really a detriment? Do we not see as clearly when we are rushing so fast, through technology, through technologically-based creative ideas? -- In Harm's Way The classic actors there blew me away. They have such *presence*. I mean, these new guys are fun -- especially Kirk. They have real presence ... they're just untried. This episode was a lot more exciting. But why do standards have to be lower on the Web than on tv? Is it just a matter of budget? That an independent production doesn't have the budget for multiple takes, huge crews, all the money behind casting, days and weeks and months of endless production, endless takes, and all the money that is ticking away in the background ... is this the difference? Is there no one to back a truly huge prouduction? Would it go up against competition with the mechanism that is TV? The huge studios, the production budgets, the standard for technical and visual excellence that has been built up over 50 years? Of course, a TV studio would never fund a project that was web-only ... would they? - Aug 16 2006
