Dear Lois,

In Don Dilley's notes, I found a reference to you in connection with Lawrence Co., Ohio Dilleys. I have been working with Don searching VA-born Dilleys. We have lost contact with Susan Wright who did much of the research on "Potomac River" Dilleys in Stafford Co., VA. Our letters have been returned. Do you have a new address for Susan or do you know what happened to her?

Don is extending Thelma Reeder's Dilley Timeline on VA Dilleys to add new information. We are finding many VA Dilleys in OH and IN in addition to the Ohio clan of Christian Dilley of Greenbrier Co., W. VA.

I am sending you a worksheet that I made while trying to get acquainted with the Lawrence Co., OH clan. I have a large collection of census records on Dilleys which I use to help confirm and extend families.

Again, Don and I are anxious to contact Susan and we hope that someone has an address better than the following one:

265 Waverley #4
Menlo Park, CA 94025

PS. Don Dille (now living in Lompoc, CA) sent me a copy of your letter to him dated 15 Feb 1981; also a couple letters from Thelma Reeder on the Christian Dilley clan of Greenbrier Co., W. VA. Do you still have contact with Thelma? My letters to her were returned. I see that both of you were in Utah at the same time and didn't see each other.

I collect census records for Dilleys and have just finished a 104 page manuscript with indices for Dilley censuses in the Eastern states. I find that the birth dates of some of Christian's children in census records do not match the dates on the worksheet extracted from data by Thelma and You. James b 1802 on the worksheet was only 36 in 1850 and 48 in 1860 by census records. In both censuses, his wife Susannah was one year older or the same age, and the children seem to fit the census ages. I also note a gap in the births of Christian's children between 1805 and 1811 which is unusual, although apparently two children in the 1810 census for Christian died young in that period after 1810.

Abner was 36 and 44 years of age in the two census records which about agrees with the worksheet dates. There was also a Luke Dilley in these two censuses in Lawrence Co., OH. His ages were 30 and 47 respectively. He was VA-born and probably related. You should know that there was a Luke Dilley in Guernsey Co., OH who belonged to the "Cumberland" Dilleys that migrated from Shenandoah Co., VA to Guernsey Co. in 1839. Their father was probably Jesse Dilley who was born in N. J. in 1770 and lived in Shenandoah Co. for the 1820 and 1830 censuses. It is obvious that mistakes were made in the census records some where along the line, but still they provide somewhat of a check when two in a row are obtained.

I will close with the remark that Don Dilley and I are working diligently on Dilleys. He is revising Thelma Reeder's Dilley Timeline and I am compiling and speculating! Several professional genealogists have been involved.

Sincerely yours,
Jay D. Andrews
