Timeline for Virginia Dilleys

By: Jay D. Andrews

Jan 1994

This chronological compilation of events that occurred to VA Dilleys during the early Years is intended to profile their activities and living sites. Censuses are important in following their lives and families. At first, Dilleys seemed scarce in because so many records in the state were destroyed by wars. No 1790 and 1800 censuses have survived, but tax records sometimes offer a substitute for locating living sites. Many VA-born Dilleys were found in censuses for OH, IN, & W VA as families moved west to settle on new lands. We have not determined the origin and parentage of most of these VA-born Dilleys. The immigrant Johannes Dilli provides a probable ancestry for the W. VA clan, but for about a dozen others born around 1780, parents have not been found. The "Cumberland" and "Belpre" Dilleys are known mostly from their residences in OH and IN counties where vital records were kept and where land and court records are available.

This version of the Timeline for VA Dilleys is revised and extended from one created by Don Dilley of CA. We depended heavily on census records for ages and periods of birth. Later events became more easily described and dated. Most Dilleys in North America are descended from John Dilley who began residence in New Jersey in 1668; the only connection for VA Dilleys to NJ is that of Jesse whose 1850 census record shows him born there. We hope that this Timeline will serve as another index to this compilation of sources for VA Dilley ancestry.
