In collaboration with Sandy McIntire in Iowa (Publisher of "Farris Files") and Bruce Pharis in Michigan, I have set up a master database that will contain records of all descendants of the Phares family that are made available to us. As of December, 1995 there were almost 7000 records in this file that includes 3330 descendants of Johnson Phares of Pendleton County, 2154 of Robert of Randolph County and 1039 of William of Burlington County, New Jersey. This file is not intended to represent a strict genealogical document, but rather an informational one. In an undertaking of this magnitude where the data is gathered from so many sources, it is impossible to verify the accuracy of records. Some is documented but much of it is not. However, it gives the researcher a foundation on which to build.
It is believed that all who spell the name "Fhares" are descended from the John Phares (Faris) family who came to the Philadelphia, PA and Burlington Co., NJ sometime before 1729. Some descendants have also been found whose surnames have been changed to "Pharis", "Pharris" or "Ferris". There are, without a doubt, descendants with other spellings of the name.
Updates to this file will be made available on a regular basis, if possible. These updates, in addition to the updated file, will include a formatted text document that shows what changes have been made to the file. Formats available are: Word for Windows, Word for DOS, Word for Mac, WordPerfect, RTF and plain text. All formats except plain text shows exactly what changes have been made. The text document only shows what records have been changed and the current data in each.
If you have an IBM compatible and can process GEDCOM files you will receive a self-extracting ZIP file containing both the GEDCOM file and a revision file.
If you cannot use GEDCOM files the data can be sent in two ways: 1) If you have a version of PAF compatible with 2.31 the 6 data files can be sent, as is; 2) The data can be sent in book form in any of the above formats.
If you are on-line the files will be uploaded, without charge, whenever there is an update available. If you are not on line, there will be a charge of $1.50 to cover cost of the disc and mailing. When you request these files, be sure to state the format listed above that you prefer.
If you have a Mac version of PAF, you can obtain a copy of the file from Bruce Pharis, 327 E. Windemere, Royal Oak, Mich. 48073-2618. His e-mail address is PharisB@aol.com. All other requests should be sent directly to me.
If you have information on any descendants of the Phares family, please send it to me at the address below so that I can include it in the file. If I cannot connect the data immediately to the family, I will save it until I can, at which time it will become part of the database. The success of this project depends on your cooperation in sharing your family data. All correspondence will be acknowledged.
