CHARLES MANSON AND WHO ELSE???

A few years ago, when Jim Comstock's HILLBILLY requested information on the West Virginia roots of 60s hippie guru and murder conspirator Charles Manson, I undertook to see what I could find out, and in fact stumbled into the fact that Charlie's direct line ancestors of a century and a half ago were residents of Randolph County, and this got me thinking. Who else among the famous might spring from some chickened out hillbilly? Could the likes of John Wayne or Randolph Scott have West Virginia Roots? How 'bout Howard Hughes or Richard Nixon? OK, if this all sounds like blue blood hunting, how 'bout Bonnie and Clyde, or John Dillinger or John Wayne Gacy? Have any of our readers did any research that turned up Allegheny Region ancestors of famous Americans? We here in the editorial offices would love to hear about it .....

ARFHS / LDS SHARE DAY A SUCCESS

The August 3rd "Family History Share Day" held in co-operation with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints was a big success. About 50 persons came out to swap family history and study regional families using the resources of the LDS Church and the ARFHS that were assembled at the site. 11 West Virginia counties as well as Falls Church, VA, Miami, FL and Baltimore, MD were represented among the attendees. Dorinda Grumbine of the LDS Church deserves a special note of recognition for her work in organizing the LDS end of the event, as do or own Marvin Hill and executive committee all of whom answered the task as usual! Among the out of town guests were the president and executive director of HACKERS CREEK PIONEER DESCENDANTS, Charlie and Joy Gilchrist. Thanks to the LDS folks and all of the attendees for making our "Share Day" a big success!
