THE CASE OF THE TWO HENRYS

Recently while trying to trace my Vandevender ancestry I sent out a query requesting information regarding the parents of Elizabeth Vandevender (1825-1879) who married Caleb Hinkle. They resided in Braxton county, WV.

I received a reply pointing to a Henry Vandevender who married Elizabeth Cowger. Immediately I set out to find what information I had available, only to discover that there were two Henry Vandevenders living at the same time.

Following are my findings, any information leading to a positive conclusion would be greatly appreciated.

JOHN S. KERNS 2/19/1819-2/18/1896

I have been searching for the parents of John S. Kerns for some time now and the following may be a possibility: I have listed them from the 1810 to 1880 census for Randolph County. There was no Kerns' living in Randolph County for 1810, so will start with 1820:

James Kerns:
1 male under 10. Could be John S. b-1819
1 male 16 to 26, this would be James
1 female 1 to 26, Most likely Susannah that is listed in the 1830 census.

1830 census for Randolph County

Susannah Kerns:
1 male under 5 Could be Andrew b- ca-1828
1 male 10 to 15 May be John S. 1819
1 female 5 to 10 May be Elizabeth. ca-1826

Barney Kerns:

1 male 80 to 90
1 female 70 to 80

William Kerns:
2 males under 5
1 male 5 to 10
1 male 10 to 15
1 male 40 to 50
1 female 10 to 15
1 female 15 to 20
1 female 30 to 40

This is the only time I have found Barney and William, so can't place them.

1840 census for Randolph County.

Daniel H. Kerns:
Males 2 - under 5 (Only time listed in Randolph, Co.)
Males 2 - 20 to 30 (Could be a son of James, or sons.)
Females 1 - under 5
Females 1 - 20 to 30

Susannah Kerns:
Males 1 - under 5 (this could be Presley.b-ca-1847)
Males 1 - 10 to 15 (this could be Andrew b-ca-1828)
Females 1- 10 to 15 (this could be Elizabeth, b-ca-1826)
Females 1- 40 to 50 (Susannah b-ca-1800)

If Susannah was the wife of James ( as I think ) Presley would have had another father.

1850 census for Randolph County:

Susan Kerns 49 b-ca-1800
Elizabeth 23 b-ca-1826
Andrew 21 b-ca-1828
Presley 12 b-ca-1847

John S. Kerns 30
Eliza (White) 25 wife
Eunice 5
Henry 3
Elizabeth 1

From here on, John S. is listed in the Pendleton County census. James Kerns must have died between 1828 and 1830, as Andrew was born around that time. If any-one has any information on this, please get in touch with David L. Cunningham, 614 Chisolm, Ave. Bridgeport, Alabama, 35740. Ph # 1-205-495-3113.

The 1860 Census shows spouse of John Leary as Harriet - all other records show her as Hannah - I am assuming a copy error.

a. George W Louk Sr and Spouse Elizabeth claimed on Census of 1880 Cyrus as brother-in-law and Sarah E Leary age 4 and William P Leary age 1 as "grand niece" and "grand nephew"

b. Does that mean that spouse Elizabeth of George W Louk was sister to Cyrus Leary?

c. James C Louk b 1844, son of George W Louk and Elizabeth, was second husband (1st Stephen Clark) of Sarah Elizabeth Leafy b 1840ish. This couple claims a John L Leary b 1860ish on 1880 census. That John L Leafy, married Evaline Chenoweth, was son of William James Leary.

GEAR / HERRON

Seek information on the GEAR and HERRON families of Huttonsville, WV; Also, Where is Reynolds Township? Judy Wright, 5733 Janet St., Milton, FL, 32570

Editor's Note: Reynolds Township was for a few years after the Civil War the name given to Huttonsville District. When the Union occupation forces came to formerly Confederate Randolph County, they installed their own government in place of the old one. This government of "Supervisors" replaced the old "Justices" and "Townships" replaced what had been "Districts". The whole thing was patterned after the counties and governments of Union areas like Pennsylvania and Ohio. For further information I would suggest BOSWORTH'S HISTORY OF RANDOLPH COUNTY
