THE CHARLES JACOB McQUAIN FAMILY CEMETERY
(Thomas C. Scott property, Big Cove Creek, Gilmer County)

THOMAS JACOB SCOTT, born 1812 and died 1851 at age 29 years, is the first person known to be buried in this cemetery. Thomas Jacob Scott married Sarah Waite, born 1825, and died 1908. She is buried Beverly Cemetery, Beverly, West Virginia. Thomas Jacob Scott was son of Thomas Scott and Nancy Skidmore Scott. Thomas Jacob's brothers Crawford, Marshall, Oliver, Andrew, James, and John. His sisters: Margaret Phillips, Elizabeth Griffy (Griffith), Rebecca (unmarried), and Eunice, wife of Hugh McQuain. Thomas Jacob Scott two daughters:

(1). Elizabeth Jane, born 1848 and married 1867 to John Maher Tyro, born 1844. John Tyro was a Captain in the Union forces of the Civil War. John and Elizabeth had eight children: James, Samuel Alexander, Adolphus Rowe, William David, Sarah Ellen, John Maher and Virginia.

(2) Nancy E., born 1850 married S. A. Hamilton in 1872 with the following children: Emma, Mary E., Blanche, Rosa, and Blaine Harrison.

Thomas Jacob Scott lived at Coalton in Randolph County. He was returning from Parkersburg, on foot, after having sold a sizable number of cattle. He apparently was in possession of a large sum of money. He spent the night at Newberne with a family of Waggoners. Mr. Waggoner operated a hotel at Newberne at the time. He became ill while in the Waggoner home and was unable to continue his journey. His relatives on Big Cove Crook were notified of his illness and Hugh McQuain (married Thomas Jacob's sister Eunice) went to Newberne. By the time they reached Newberne Thomas Jacob was dead. None of his money was found. His body was brought to Big Cove Creek and buried in this cemetery. (The property at the time was (owned by Charles Jacob McQuain). Stories circulated that he was robbed and killed while in the Waggoner home.
