Several members of ARFHS chaired a table at the Treasure Mountain Festival in Franklin, West Virginia on September 20. A number of festival goers stopped to ask questions and a new member or two was gained. ARFHS members David Armstrong, Jeff Car., Jennie Hott and Bonnie Miller were on hand for the event, and Yankee Doodle himself was present in the form of Mr. Carr in Revolutionary period costume.
There was some brief discussion about forming sub interest groups within the ARFHS, much like the German interest, Irish interest, Computer interest etc. groups inside of the structure of the Western Pennsylvania Genealogical Society at Pittsburgh. It is thought that the above persons would be a good core group to start a Pendleton County interest group. If any member would be interested in joining such a group contact Jeff Carr, 1255 Sunset Ave. Ext., Charlottesville, VA, 22903 phone (804) 295-9308. As of this writing no plans are in place to form a Pendleton County interest group but we would be open to ideas and suggestions on the same or other areas of special interest.
ARFHS member Bonnie Miller, Rt 5 Box 240, Harrisonburg, VA, 22801 has started working on a Pendleton County resource list. This will include a listing of articles, publications, pamphlets, etc. of interest to Pendleton County history and genealogy. If any reader knows of any obscure newspaper or magazine articles that mention or deal with old Pendleton County please drop a card to Bonnie so we can help her get this important project off the ground.
The photo on the cover of this issue is identified as that of William D Armstrong. The original is in possession of Donald Quick, and he offers two statements about the picture, as told to him by his aunts. Mr. Quick says that the photo is a likeness of “Uncle Billy” Armstrong of Files Creek, and that he (Billy) was the father of Mr. Quick’s grandmother, Julia Armstrong Vaughn. Death records indicate that the father of Julia Armstrong Vaughn was Thomas F. Armstrong, father of William D. Armstrong. The clothing style in the picture dates it after c. 1890, so it is not likely to be a picture of Thomas F. who died in 1880. It is more consistent with a photo of William D. Armstrong. Perhaps a closer look is needed at the parentage of Julia Armstrong Vaughn based on information in Mr. Quick’s family. Or, as Mr. Quick agrees, perhaps some confusion of names and generations has crept into the store over the past 100 years. It is likely that the photo on the cover can be identified as William D. Armstrong with some certainty so long as the qualifying information is kept in mind.
