Don Knotts’ Roots in Monongalia County

For years actor Don Knotts has delighted generations of Americans in such roles as deputy Barney Fife of "The Andy Griffith Show" fame. Don Knotts was originally from Morgantown, West Virginia, and the following are some brief notes on the background of an exemplary West Virginian

In 1913, Lewis W. Knotts was a resident of Greene County, Pennsylvania but had land in Cass District of Monongalia County, West Virginia. He was still a resident of Green County when he deeded land in Grant District of Monongalia County to W.J. Knotts.

Monongalia County deed book 208 age 374 in 1926 lists the heirs of the deceased (intestate) Lewis Knotts as: S.V. and Glemma Guthrie, Ira K. and Haddie Knotts, William J. and Elsie Knotts, Franklin S. and Nellie Knotts all of Monongalia County; Laurence Knotts (unmarried), Arthur and Cecile Kiger, Lambert and Ella Knotts Ansel and Nannie Lemley, Leonard Renner of Greene County, Pennsylvania; Austin K. and Annie Moore of Harrison County, Ohio.

There were a number of families named Minor in Northern West Virginia. Perhaps some reader can offer more genealogical background on the above family.
