The Aminocephalosporin Antibiotics
Aminocephalosporin antibiotics (below left)
have a ß-aletheine-like moiety embedded in their base structure.
Like ß-aletheine (below center), they lack the terminal carboxyl
moiety of vitaletheine (below right). It would be interesting to determine
how much of the antibiotic properties attributed to the aminocephalosporins
arise from a stimulation of cytolytic antibody production that is typical
of immune responses to ß-alethine.
