| This painting is a figure study in lights and darks only. Only white and black oil paint was used, either pure, or mixed into various shades of gray. The model is sitting in a chair behind a bouquet of flowers. Many Renaissance painters would begin a painting this way, adding color afterwards, and I thought about doing that as well. When I got this far, however, the painting reminded me of a lovely silver-toned black and white photograph, so I decided to leave it this way. ---T. B. |
