2025 CFOD PLAYOFF PREVIEW ROUND 1 Fertile Crescent Ziggurats (104-58, MK Conference wildcard) vs. Arlington Arthropods (95-67, Mantle Division winner) The Ziggurats fired on all cylinders this season, chasing the Rock for the Koufax division pennant, actually taking the lead late in the season with the league's best record before finishing with the MK Conference wildcard and the league's 2nd best record. Yainer Diaz hit 26 home runs with 71 runs scored and 99 RBI, and Jorge Polanco hit 24 home runs with 105 RBI. James Wood hit 31 home runs with 99 runs scored and 110 RBI, and Corbin Carroll hit 26 triples, hit 28 home runs, stole 49 bases, drove in 99 runs and scored 111 runs. Yoshinobu Yamamoto went 16-5 with a 2.33 ERA, and Jose Soriano won 14 games. The team saved 58 games across 11 relievers, with no reliever having more than 10 saves. Arlington won its 3rd straight Mantle Division title. Shohei Ohtani had another great season, hitting .290 with 53 home runs, 26 stolen bases, 135 runs scored and 111 RBI. Ivan Herrera hit .311 with 23 home runs, 62 runs scored and 57 RBI in 312 at bats, while Alex Bregman hit 21 home runs with 80 runs scored. Hunter Goodman smacked 38 home runs with 107 RBI, and Taylor Ward hit 28 home runs with 85 runs scored and 85 RBI. Kevin Gausman went 17-10 with a 3.98 ERA, and Jack Leiter was 10-5 with a 3.90 ERA. Brad Keller saved 22 games in relief, and Cade Smith saved 13 with a 2.12 ERA. In 9 regular season games, the Arthropods won the season series 6 games to 3. In the bottom of the first of this round 1 series opener, Trent Grisham started off with a leadoff solo home run, giving Arlington a quick 1-0 lead. In the top of the 4th, Roman Anthony walked, moved to second on a Corbin Carroll walk and scored on a base hit from Isaac Collins. The Ziggurats moved out in front in the 5th when Lenyn Sosa walked and scored on a double from Luke Keaschall. 2-1 Fertile Crescent after 5 innings. The score remained 2-1 Ziggurats heading into the bottom of the 9th. Andres Munoz was on the mound. Hunter Goodman hit a leadoff single. Munoz was pulled in favor of Bryan Abreu. CJ Abrams was plunked by a pitch. Abreu was pulled in favor of Matt Brash, 2 on, 0 outs, Arthropods down by 1. Jeremiah Jackson struck out for the first out of the inning. Joey Loperfido struck out for out #2. Up came pinch hitter Masataka Yoshida, with 2 on, 2 outs and his team down by 1. Yoshida couldn't get anything going, popping out to end the game. Arlington closed the gap to 1 run in the 3rd, when Shohei Ohtani hit a bases loaded single, scoring 2 runs. The Ziggurats padded their lead in the 4th with a solo home run from Yainer Diaz. In the 8th, Fertile Crescent made it 5-2 when Carroll grounded out with runners at the corners, allowing another run to score. Daniel Palencia was pitching for the Ziggurats in the bottom of the 9th with a 3 run lead. FIrst batter up, Ivan Herrera, singled. Taylor Ward hit into a double play, leaving the bases empty with 0 outs. Pinch hitter Ha-Seong Kim singled. Pinch hitter Dylan Moore singled, bringing the tying run to the plate in Jeremiah Jackson. Left Gabe Speier was brought on to face Jackson, which proved to be the right call, as Jackson struck out to end the game. The Arthropods tied it up in the 3rd with a Trent Grisham home run. 1-1 tie game after 3. In the bottom of the 4th, Masyn Winn was plunked by a pitch, and Keaschall's ground out moved Winn up 90 feet. Anthony singled, scoring Winn. Corbin Carroll follwed up with a 2-run shot. 3-run Ziggurats inning, and Luis Castillo was done for the day. The Arthropods had a scoring opportunity in the 6th, loading the bases with 1 out. Bryson Stott singled, scoring a run. On came Justin Wrobleski in relief. Grisham singled, scoring another run. Shohei Ohtani grounded out, driving in another run and tied the game up at 4. In the top of the 7th, with a runner at third, Kyle Manzardo singled, scoring a run and giving Arlington their first lead of the game. With 1 out and 1 on, Taylor Ward went yard. 2-run shot, and the Arthropods were up 7-4. In the bottom of the 8th, Cade Smith was pitching for Arlington. Yainer Diaz struck out. Lenyn Sosa popped out. Winn smacked a 2 out double, and Keaschall walked to put 2 runners on. Anthony walked to load the bases. Corbin Carroll smacked a double, scoring 2 runners to tie the game up at 7. Neither team would score in the 8th or 9th, so the game would go to extra innings with the score tied at 7. In teh top of the 9th, Shohei Ohtani hit a 1 out single. With 2 outs, pinch hitter Dylan Moore smacked a grounder to Jorge Polanco, who bobbled it. Two runners on, and Gabe Speier was brought on to face pinch hitter Eric Wagaman. Wagaman doubled, scoring Ohtani to put Arlington up 8-7. After Jeremiah Jackson walked to load the bases, Taylor Ward brought them all home with a grand slam home run. 5-run 10th, and the Arthropods were up 12-7 heading into the bottom of the inning. Brad Keller was pitching for Arlington in the bottom of the 10th with a 5-run lead. Pinch hitter Jake Mangum hit a leadoff double, and Keaschall singled to put runners at the corners. Anthony popped out and Carroll struck out to give the Ziggurats 1 more out in the game. James Wood walked to load the bases. Up came pinch hitter Jackson Churio. On a 3-2 pitch, Keller got Chourio to ground out to end the game. Arlington wins their first game of the series with a 12-7 victory in 10 innings. In the bottom of the 2nd, Isaac Collins singled, moved to third on a double from Yainer Diaz, Lenyn Sosa drove them both in with a double. With 2 outs, Luke Keaschall doubled, scoring Sosa to tie the game up at 3. Fertile Crescent had another scoring opportunity in the bottom of the 6th, loading the bases with 2 outs. But Isaac Collins couldn't capitalize, striking out to end the inning, score tied at 3. In the top of the 7th, pinch hitter CJ Abrams walked, and Alex Bregman followed up with a 2-run dinger. Shohei Ohtani hit his 2nd solo home run of the game for a 6-3 lead after 7 innings. In the bottom of the 8th, Graham Ashcraft was on the mound for Arlington, the 7th pitcher for the Arthropods this game. Corbin Carroll hit a leadoff single, then Collins doubled, scoring Carroll. On came Kyle Nicolas in relief, the 8th pitcher (and last remaining reliever) for Arlington. Jorge Polanco popped out for out #2. Luis Torrens singled, scoring Collins to make it a 6-5 Arlington lead. The score remained 6-5 Arlington heading into the bottom of the 9th. Nicolas was still pitching. Luke Keaschall started things off with a solo home run to tie the game at 6. After Roman Anthong hit a fly out, Carroll singled. James Wood flied out for out #2. With Isaac Collins at bat, Carroll took matters into his own hands, stealing second. Hunter Goodman's throw went errant, allowing Carroll to move to third on the error.
