2025 CFOD PLAYOFF PREVIEW CFOD WORLD SERIES Fertile Crescent Ziggurats (104-58, MK Conference wildcard, 4-1 over Arthropods in Round 1, 4-3 over Rock in MK Conf Finals) vs. Park City Climbers (92-70, Young Division winner, 4-3 over Coneheads in Round 1, 4-2 over Mangos in RY Conf Finals) The Ziggurats posted the 2nd best record in the majors, winning the MK Conference wildcard. They bested the Arthropods in 5 games in round 1, then defeated division rival (and the team with the best record in the league) Cincinnati in 7 games to earn their first trip to the World Series since 2018 (and their first since moving to Fertile Crescent). Jorge Polanco had a strong conference finals, hitting .385 with 3 home runs, 7 runs scored and 5 RBI. Jackson Chourio scored 4 runs, and Corbin Carroll hit 2 home runs, 3 runs scored and 5 RBI. James Wood drove in 4 runs. MacKenzie Gore was 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA in his lone start, and Jose Soriano went 1-0 with a 2.25 ERA in 2 starts. Huascar Brazoban, Andres Munoz and Steven Okert combined for 4 1/3 innings of shutout relief. The Climbers have played the comeback kids all season long, rallying in the 2nd half to take the Young division title, then coming back from an 0-3 deficit to defeat the Coneheads in round 1 and coming back from an 0-2 deficit against the Mangos in the RY Conference finals to reach the world series for the first time since 2005. Manny Machado hit .316 with a home run and 4 runs scored in the conference finals. Trevor Larnach added 2 home runs, 3 runs scored and 3 RBI, and Ramon Laureano hit 2 home runs with 3 runs scored and 4 RBI. Dean Kremer pitched 6 shutout innings with a win in his only start, and Quinn Priester was 1-1 with a 1.50 ERA in 2 starts. Matt Svanson pitched 5 shutout innings of relief in 3 appearances, notching 3 saves, giving up no hits or walkd and struck out 4. Svanson, Garrett Cleavinger, Brant Hurter, and Mike Vasil combined for 8 shutout innings, 4 saves and a win. In 4 regular season games, the Climbers won the series 3 games to 1. Park City has home field advantage due to their pennant winning status. ******************************************************************* GAME ONE -- Ziggurats (Yamamoto) at Climbers (Pivetta). In the opening game of the world series, the Ziggurats were the first team to score, when in the 4th inning Luke Keaschall walked, then stole second, and when the throw by Will Smith sailed into the outfield Keaschall advanced to third on the error. James Wood doubled, scoring Keashall. In the top of the 7th, Fertile Crescent made it 2-0 with a solo home run from Jorge Polanco. In the bottom of the 8th, Andres Munoz was pitching in relief for the Ziggurats. Vladimir Guerrero Jr hit a 2 out double and moved to third on a Munuz wild pitch. Smith doubled, scoring Guerrero. Manny Machado walked to put 2 runners on. Trevor Larnach smacked a base hit, scoring Smith to tie the game up at 2. Neither team would score in the 9th, so the game would go into extra inning. Robert Suarez was pitching for the Climbers in the top of the 10th, working into his 2nd inning of relief, and retired the batters in order. In the bottom of the 10th, Bryan Abreu was pitching for the Ziggurats with the score tied at 2. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. struck out. Smith walked, and Abreu was replaced wtih Matt Brash. Machado popped out for the 2nd out of the inning. Trevor Larnach singled, putting runners at the corners. Starling Marte was at the plate. A single would win it for Park City. Marte walked, loading the bases. Now at the plate was Francisco Lindor. Reaching safely at first would win the game. On a 3-1 pitch, Brash threw a ball, awarding Lindor first base and walking in the winning run. Park City will not start this series in a deficit, winning game 1 by a score of 3-2 in 10 innings. Luis Torrens grounded out for the first out of the game. Lenyn Sosa singled, and Trea Turner singled to put 2 runners on. Luke Keaschall smacked a base hit, scoring Sosa to put Fertile Crescent up 1-0. Roman Anthony singled, scoring Turner. Svanson would load the bases with 1 out, but escaped without further score. Still, the damage had been done, Svanson's scoreless streak was broken, and the Ziggurats were up 2-0 heading into the bottom of the inning. Daniel Palencia was the reliever of record for the Ziggurats in the bottom of the 9th, his team up by 2. First batter up, Brent Rooker, struck out. Will Smith hit a single, and Palencia was pulled in favor of Gabe Speier to face Francisco Lindor. Lindor struck out for out #2. Speier was pulled in favor of Steven Okert to face pinch hitter Carlos Narvaez. The Climbers were down by 2 with 2 outs, but Narvaez represented the tying run. On a 3-2 pitch, Narvaez swung but failed to connect for the strikeout. The Ziggurats win game 2 by a score of 2-0 to even up the series. Isaac Collins smoked a grounder to Francisco Lindor, who bobbled it. Error to the shortstop, and runners were at the corners. Jackson Chourio doubled, scoring Wood for the unearned run. In the bottom of the 2nd, Starling Marte was plunked by a pitch, but then was tagged out on a Francisco Lindor ground out. The Ziggurats padded their lead in the bottom of the inning, when with 0 outs and the bases loaded, Corbin Carroll hit into a double play, allowing a runner to score. 5-1 Fertile Crescent after 2. In the 5th, the lead was cut to 3 when Narvaez hit a solo home run. The Zigguats responded with 3 runs in the bottom of the inning, highlighted by a 2-RBI double from Wood. 8-2 Ziggurats after 4. Park City scored 2 in the 5th, but the Ziggurats added a run of their own in the 6th for a 9-4 comfortable lead. In the top of the 7th, Park City had a scoring opportunity, loading the bases with 2 outs. Starling Marte was forced in by a walk, making it 9-5 Ziggurats and bringing the tying run to the plate in Francisco Lindor. But Lindor couldn't keep it going, hitting a fly out to end the inning. The score was 9-5 Ziggurats heading into the top of the 9th. Andres Munoz was pitching for Fertile Crescent. Ramon Laureano greeted him with a leadoff single. Colt Keith struck out for out #1.
