About the photos
These images were taken with a Nikon D100 digital SLR with a 200mm zoom lens.
The images here are just tiny pieces of the original 3000x2000 source images,
as the moon was still only a small part of the digitized field. Where the
moon is still white, the camera was hand-held. Later in the eclipse, when the
available light was too dim to allow fast exposure times, the camera was
tripod mounted. For the early photos the camera was set at ISO 200, but
as the eclipse progressed I increased the sensitivity to ISO 1600.
In all cases below, I was able to get the exposure set just by using the spot
metering feature of the D100. In some cases I did have to experiment a lot
until I got the "spot" in the right part of the moon to get what I wanted.
Just beginning, around 7:20pm mountain
time.
