I hate WhisperLites! I’ve had a Svea Optimus for years which I affectionately call the bomb - you pump it, turn on the gas for a moment, then turn it off, stand back and toss a match. The thing explodes in a ball of flame, and once it burns down, you go back, turn the gas back on and it works, reliably, in any conditions. Mine has been through the Australian Outback, Newfoundland (raining every day), winter, summer, high elevation and low. Well, the pump finally gave up the ghost and I couldn’t find any replacement parts (no one seems to carry it anymore), so I went to a local outdoor store to buy a replacement. Years ago I went camping with a friend with a WhisperLite and my recollection was that the thing was a pain to use - finicky and required a lot of attention. So I was not going to buy one, but the guy at the store waxed poetic and I put the past experience down to a fluke and bought the WhisperLite. Took it home, tried it out - lit with no problem. Took it out that weekend (Bull Valley Gorge), first night it worked great, second night, nothing! No pressure. I took the stove back to the store. They looked at it and found an o-ring which had slid out of place in the pump, causing it to not build pressure. Alright, shouldn’t happen to a new pump, but it's fixed right? Took it home, checked it out - worked great. Took it out the next weekend. Again, first night, it works great. Second night, after the all day grind in Muddy Creek with 2 granola bars for breakfast, 2 more and a small pack of beef jerky for lunch, and an orange for a 5 PM snack, I’m starving and looking forward to a good meal. And, you guessed it, the @#$%!* thing wouldn’t light! Seemed like a different symptom, I had resistance on the pump, like it was building pressure, but, no gas coming out. Enraged I hurled the thing as far as I could. Still not satisfied, I disconnected the gas bottle/pump from the stove, and heaved them separately. The stove was last seen hanging in a tree and the pump was broken off at the gas bottle. 2 more granola bars and another orange for dinner, damn stove ...
