What is “Ballroom Dancing for Dogs?”

Actually it’s the sport of Canine Freestyle tailored to pet owners who just want to have some fun with their dogs. Beginning March 23, 2007 and for five Fridays evenings thereafter, Rosalie James, the founder of Rio Grande Canine Freestylers and owner of her new business called “Dancing Paws”, will be teaching basic freestyle skills in classes from 7-8 p.m at West Mesa School for Dogs. Students will learn easy “dance” moves to teach their dogs including spins, circles, backing, sidepassing and a couple of crowd-wowing moves for the big finale. It’s all done to music as the handler and dog move with the beat.

Canine Freestyle is actually a recognized dog sport with live and video competition opportunities to earn titles. It’s so much fun that it’s easy to get “hooked” and often people who started dancing with their dogs for the fun of it only decide to learn more about it and do more with it. For those people, there’s the Rio Grande Canine Freestylers club which meets at West Mesa School for Dogs on Saturday mornings.

The first session of Ballroom Dancing for Dogs classes will meet for six weeks starting March 23. Additional six-week sessions will be scheduled. Classes are limited to eight handler/dog couples. The fee is $75 for the six classes. Pre-registration is necessary. Dogs must be current on their vaccinations. Minimum age six months. No maximum age limit. For more information and pre-registration, call Rosalie at 839-4238 or e-mail to rosaliesj@cableone.net
