Cordova Road - current situation
Cordova may get some attention, or better yet, money allocated, for
pedestrian improvements. This concerns the section between Luisa St. and
Old Pecos Trail.
Here is the current situation, block by block:
-
Luisa St. Intersection:
- SW corner: Nice new sidewalk with plantings. This wraps around
a new building, and connects to the shopping center further to the
West (Furrs, Radio Shack etc).
- SE corner: This is an abandoned gas stationed, currently used
for rental truck parking. Blacktop all over, no sidewalk.
- North side: New sidewalk. Connects the new entry to the Osco
shopping center to the Los Alamos Credit Union.
-
Luisa to Don Diego:
- South side: old gas station,blacktop;
Wall with 7' clearance to the curb, dirt;
Chainlink fence, 3' clearance, dirt.
- North side: new sidewalk;
Credit Union
-
Don Diego intersection:
- SW corner: dirt to 3' clearance, no cut.
- SE corner: dirt, cut to nowhere, pole for stoplight.
- NW corner: good sidewalk all around.
- NE corner: new sidewalk with nice plantings (along Alfalfa's
parking lot).
-
Don Diego to Morelia:
- South side: wall, 5' clearance, dirt, with stoplight pole
partially blocking it;
Driveways and dirt;
5' sidewalk.
- North side: sidewalk with plantings (Alfalfa's);
Blacktop and dirt, 7' clearance to walls.
-
Moralia to Escalante:
- South side: 7' clearance, dirt, with a large tree in it.
- North side: Blacktop and dirt, 7' clearance to walls.
-
Escalante to Galisteo:
- South side: dirt and trees, 2' clearance;
3' sidewalk, along 9' of brush and trees, wall.
- North side: 6' walk to wall;
-
Galisteo intersection:
This is the messy intersection by the rose garden park. It is messy
because no clear distinction is made between Galisteo Park (on the west
side of the park) and Galisteo Av, on the east side of the park. This
is because the park does not quite reach Cordova, and leaves an
ill-defined expanse of asphalt.
- SW corner: 3' walk, no cut.
- SE corner: dirt, no cut
- NW corner: 6' walk, does not continue around the corner;
No curbcut.
- NE corner: dirt lot.
-
Galisteo to Malaga:
- South side: 5' dirt, to a wall.
- North side: dirt lot;
3'-2' clearance to a wall; behind the wall starts level, but
goes quite deep.
-
Malaga to Don Gaspar:
- South side: dirt, trees and brush right up to the curb.
- North side: 2'-1' clearance to a wall. Behind the wall starts
deep, levels toward Gaspar.
-
Don Gaspar intersection:
- SW corner: curbcut to dirt.
- SE corner: curbcut to dirt.
- NW corner: 2' clearance to wall, dirt.
- NE corner: curbcut to 4' walk, dirt on Gaspar. The walk has
thelephone poles in it.
-
Gaspar to Seville:
- South side: 4' clearance to wall, dirt;
Open field
- North side: 4' walk with telephone poles.
-
Seville to Madrid:
- South side: 2' clearance to wall;
Dirt with trees right along the curb.
- North side: dirt, with gentle dropoff.
-
Madrid to Cordova Lana:
- South side: dirt, trees and shrubs.
- North side: dirt and shrubs;
Gravel and landscaping right up to the curb (church).
-
Cordova Lane to Old PecosTrail:
- South side: Fence, shrubs and trees right up to the curb;
Shrubs right up to the curb.
- North side: gravel and landscaping (church);
Trees on the curb;
St John's church - juniper landscaping, asphalt parking lot.
Summary and general remarks:
-
There is a fair bit of foot traffic from the western end to the rose park
(Galisteo), on both the south and the north sides of Cordova.
East of the rose park, there is little pedestrian traffic, and
what there is is probably for establishments on the north side of Cordova
- churches and schools.
-
Another consideration is that even if there were a sidewalk on the south
side of
the street, it would be ice-covered for much of the winter, since this
side is heavily shaded by trees, shrubbery fences and walls.
-
There are bus stops on some of the side streets, several dozen yards from
the respective intersections with Cordova. In several places, if there is a
sidewalk on Cordova, it does not wrap around the corner to reach the bus
stop.
-
There are no provisions anywhere for bicycles.
Previous documents:
There is a memo from 6 July 96, from
the Don Diego Neighborhood
Association, the Don Gaspar Neighborhood Association, Galisteo Subdivision

In this memo, many concerns about Cordova are expressed, and solutions
proposed.
