cordova - public meeting at EJ

Public meeting, 10 April 2000 at E.J Martinez

A public meeting was held at which the current plans were presented, and public input was sollicited. The engineers of CIP had worked out many details of the project, and are ready to go to work pretty much immediately. They have a budget of $150K, which will be stretched by contracting with the 'locals program'. The principal project engineer is Kim Moon.

The project encompasses both sides of Cordova from Luisa Street to Galisteo. $150K will buy 3'-wide sidewalks on both sides, handicapped-friendly ramps at intersections, relocation of a few traffic light poles, and the reconstruction of the North end of the Rose Park, involving Galisteo and Galisteo Parkway.

Number of lanes at the Galisteo intersection: On the drawing presented at the meeting, a right-hand turn lane was drawn for eastbound traffic on Cordova making a r.h. turn onto Galisteo southbound. Most people at the meeting wanted that r.h. turn lane removed. Providing more asphalt will make traffic problems worse, not better. In fact, a lot of people at the meeting would even like to see Cordova reduced to a single lane each eastbound and westbound (but that's another project).

Galisteo Parkway entrance: several options were discussed.
(1) On the drawings, the entry was reduced to a single lane, allowing entry to G.Parkway only.
(2) An older proposal was to close off the North end of G.P completely. A door-to-door poll on G.P. in 1998 found substantial, but not unanimous support for this. At the meeting, there seemed to be some interest, but by no means overwhelming support.
(3) Several residents a the meeting did not want to give up the option of both-way access to G.P. to/from Cordova. However, no one objected to making the entrance as narrow as allowed by Traffic Division. In addition, a 'traffic table' across the entrance would emphasize that this is an entry into a pedestrian-friendly area. Options besides a traffic table are colored and/or stamped concrete, bricks etc.

Driveway details: especially on the north side of Cordova between Alfalfa's and Galisteo, driveways will be affected. City will work with each resident individually to work out details of how and when work in front of their property will be done. Schedule your own meeting with Kim Moon; Ron Sandoval, who will actually be in charge of the work on the ground, will also attend.

Calendar: things are moving fast - plans are to start in the first week of May, or the first week in June. Work will start on the West end, and move East block by block, taking 1-2 weeks per block, with a total time estimated at about 2.5 months. During work hours (7AM-4PM), traffic will be affected, but plans are for the barrels to be moved to the curbside overnight.
