Notes

Letter to cousin who is requesting info on family genealogy. 2904 Mitchell Ave Waco Texas October 26, 1960 Dear Mary Frank, So sorry I have been so long in answering your nice letter, but many things have come up. Charles, my husband has been in the hospital and since coming home I have really been busy. Last Sunday we celebrated our 50th Wedding Anniversary, our Children gave us a party. It was wonderful and just lovely. I have been so let down from the fun and excitement, that I have really been taking it easy since. Mary Frank, it was a pleasure hearing from a relative on my dear Mothers side. When I was a child, my Mother would take us to see our Grandmother "Lucy Amanda (Browning) Smith". I also remember your Father (Cousin Jim) as we always called him, and your Aunts "Lucy, Vina, Nannie, and Jessie". I believe Jessie was near my age as we played together. My Mother use to speak of our grandfather, "Thomas Mercer Smith". He was known as Major T. M. Smith. She would tell us what a fine man he was, loved by every one. They addressed him as Major. I remember Mother telling us he owned 75 slaves. He would go to New Orleans where He would trade and buy slaves. He would buy silk material by the bolt, for grandmother to make their dresses (in those days, silk was very costly). I heard mother say, Grandfather T M Smith was married or had been before, but she never did get excited over you girls attempt to get history of Grandfather T M Smith and Grandmother Lucy Amanda Smith. I remember Mother saying her father Thomas Smith had been married before, but she didn't know if there were children by his former marriage. I remember her telling us about his trips to New Orleans to trade and buy slaves. You should go to the old Cabildo building in the French Quarters in New Orleans where they still have the old slave auction block. I know this isn't the history you need but I think it is interesting to know. Probably Lucy and some or the other aunts can tell you similar stories that they use to hear too. I don't have my Mothers Bible, but I believe my Sister Lena has it. I will write her. I have my Dads bible, it only has his birth and my Mothers birth and death record. mother was born June 12, 1859 and died May 26, 1915 in Overton Texas. I don't know where she was born. My Dad, General Henderson Crow was born in Henderson, Texas May 25, 1856 and died January 2, 1955 here in Waco. He was born in Overton Texas. There were only three of us children, Lena, Lawrence, and me (Clara Verna). I was named for Aunt Clara. I forgot to mention about a letter my Mother (Julia smith) got from her Mother (Lucy Amanda Smith) March 3, 1900. We where living in Temple Texas, I was ten years old at the time. This letter was about land grandfather T M Smith deeded to Grandmother, but she said in the letter it was never recorded (he did this long before he died) so grandmother said. After that, Grandmother sold this land to a Mr. Poindexter with all the children's signatures, but she said it was never recorded. She said she had to take the land back. Then she let Uncle Frank (your Grandfather) have it. She also stated in the letter that Probate Court was coming up in Crockett Texas in May èy1900. She was to see about at that time. I don't know what was ever done about this, but I remember mother talking about grandmother having land in or near Woodville Texas, and about a Railroad Co. hauling big timber off it. But She said they never received penny from them. Years since, I understand there are lots of oil wells around there, but I don't know if they are on this property or not. If they don't have a record or deed to this property, it seems it still belong to the heirs. You may find out something there in Crockett or Woodville. I use to her mother speak of that place. My Mother and Father were married when Mother was 21 years old and she was teaching school, but I don't know where. I am going to write an Aunt who is 98 years old and lives in Houston. She and Mother were very close. She is my Dads sister and she still has a wonderful mind. She may remember things mother told her. I am sorry I can't give you the information you need. If I find out any thing more, I will write, and will appreciate if you do the same. Lovingly Verna P.S. Best wishes and Love to all my Cousins NOTES TAKEN BY CLARA OF HER FAMILY.
