The Snevely family came to this country from Switzerland - before 1852.
James Elliott Snevely was probably a salesman for most of his life, but
was also a prospector during the 1898 Alaskan gold rush. He lived in
Chetopa, Kansas (selling coal), and in Walnut Grove, Missouri. In 1906,
the family was in San Francisco, at the time of the big earthquake, after
which they moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, which was where Nellie Snevely
met John Edward Eckersley and where they were ultimately married.
