The original proposal which was floated was too big to fit inside the City's 'small sidewalk' program, which has a yearly budget of about 180K$. Also, the neighborhoods saw some parts of the original proposal as not needed (such as walks on the south side of Cordova between Gaspar and Old Santa Fe Trail). The prioritized list produced by DDNA was the basis for a scaled-down proposal, brought before the Public Works committee for a vote. The proposal, which was accepted unanimously, basically consists of priorities One and Two of the list, minus closing Galisteo Parkway. Clearly nobody there wanted to tackle this item, and it was gingerly stepped around.
Clearly closing off of Galisteo Parkway is an opportunity that will not come around again. It does not cost much extra, if anything at all, once you are placing new curbs at the end of the rose park anyway. We will have to canvass the residents of Galisteo Parkway to see what they prefer, and if we find overwhelming support, we should try to have it added back in.
The proposal next goes to the Finance Committee.
