This is the intersection from the previous slide, reworked to make it more
pedestrian-friendly. The width of the pavement is considerably reduced.
On approach, there is a gentle bump up, which raises the surface of the
intersection to be level with the sidewalks. People with wheelchairs,
strollers and the like will appreciate this. In typical applications,
the bumps up are made out of a few rows of cobblestones. The raised
pavement of the intersection is made of a different material than the
roadsurface of the approaching streets. There are many choices, but the
most attractive are brick, or colored concrete.
Plant boxes, one or two railroad ties high, are placed very close to the
curb, visually narrowing the road. The plants in there should not be so
tall as to obscure pedestrians attempting to cross.
