ddna talk - thing to do

Current status, and what to do next

  • collect input
continue to solicit input from neighbors, shopowners, experts...

  • make drawings and complete a packet
I intend for these web pages to become the packet. They will contain all details, in text and drawings, including alternative solutions for various sections.

  • present to all parties
When these pages are almost done, we can print them out and use them to show to the shop~ and home owners along Marquez, to get their approval, and/or to get one last round of input. At this point we will also show the packet to Cyrus for feedback and possible final adjustments. (12 July 1997)

  • go to the city
With the final packet finished, Cyrus started the process of guiding it past committees, boards, reviews etcetera. Copies were distributed for comment to:
    • Public Works Department, Traffic
    • Fire Department
    • Permit and Development Review
    • Comunity Services Division
    • Public Works Department, Streets and Drainage
    • Police Department, Community Relations
    • Permit and Devcelopment Review
    • Public Works Department, Engineering Division
    • Parks and Recreation
    • Parking Division
On 19 November 97 we met with Cyrus and went over all the comments. None seemed to present serious problems. We addressed them all, and prepared a written response to the comments raised at City Hall.

  • On 19 Feb 98 we (Cyrus, Carry, Laura, Karl and I) went before the safety committee and got the green light from them - another hurdle passed. The proposal now goes to Public Works.

  • On 12 May 98 the proposal got conceptual approval at a city council meeting.

  • The project then stalled for lack of funding ...

  • Eventually, this pilot project got overtaken by the real Traffic Calming Program. In 2001, when the first call for proposals under the new program went out, I submitted the package to the program office, where it was ranked along with all the other proposals. It did not pass the first cut, mainly because the traffic volume was too low.

In the end, it was a lot of work, but not all in vain. I believe that in retrospect, this project played a sizable role in the establishment, a few years later, of Santa Fe's Traffic Calming Program.
