Notes

FAMILY PUZZLERS 16 November 24,1977,No.527 SMITH - TRAYLOR - BROWNING - CLARK - Mrs. Nannie Smith English, 507 S. 5th St., Crockett, TX 75835 seeks parents and siblings of THOMAS MERCER (?) SMITH b. 1795 GA. He joined the Creek Indian War 8-23-1813 under Capt. WILLIAM OWENS, infantry in 2nd Regiment of Georgia Militia commanded by COL. JENKINS under GEN. JOHN FLOYD. He enrolled at Lexington, GA, and was mustered out at Fort Hawkins, GA 3-11-1814. In 1819 Thomas m. POLLY TRAYLOR in Dallas Co., AL and lived then in Perry Co., AL. He m. 2nd MRS. MARGARET CLARK in Union Parish, LA in 1843, and third to LUCY ANN BROWNING in Claiborne Parish, LA in 1852, living in Union. Thomas died in 1873 in Tyler Co., TX. EDITOR'S NOTE: I am now working on some copies of muster rolls of Georgia War of 1812 militia troops which are outside of federal and Georgia Archives. Most of these lists were made in fall of 1812 or in 1815, however and very few in 1813. There is a muster roll from the company of CAPT. WILLIAM OWEN, with officers LT. JOHN FELTON, ENSIGN BURWELL POPE, an infantry unit from Oglethorpe Co., GA, with roll taken 9-16-1812. At the time they were part of the 1st Brigade, 3rd Division of Georgia Militia under the command of GEN. JOHN STEWART. Stewart declined to command the Georgia forces in the actual conflict due to his advanced age, and Floyd led the troops in battle. The only SMITH seen on the 1812 list was: #36, private FREDERICK SMITH, aged 31, 5 feet 10 inches, with blue eyes and dark hair. At the present time I do not have these lists ready to locate a Soldier. When the process is completed they will be published in alphabetical order, with whatever personal information appeared on the rolls (sometimes county and state of birth, occupation, complexion) as an article in THE GEORGIA GENEALOGIST. The first detail roll, of Elbert-Wilkes-Madison Counties, 1812 has been begun THE GEORGIA GENEALOGIST #28 issue, just completed. This was one of the "bests' rolls for it included answers to all the questions mentioned above on some of the soldiers. Later rolls were far less detailed, but do show the county of residence of the soldier when he saw service with the militia. In the meantime, check federal records for bounty land warrants, or a pension for military service of Smith or his surviving widow.
