Currently, the entry maneuver to
Camino de los Marquez by traffic moving east on Cordova is a fast, 'dog
leg' maneuver. The entry is not controled by traffic signs or lights.
The space between the pear-shaped island, and the opposite curb on the
right is 35, with large curves, so that one hardly has to slow down
making the zigzag from Cordova into Marquez.
Proposal:
We propose here to cut
the width of the entry in two by extending the island to the right,
and give the curb at the new entry a relatively small radius. The new
entry is
essentially straight across from the entry to the Furr's parking lot,
which can be seen at the bottom of the map.
The traffic island itself currently
is a slab of concrete. In the new plan, it is filled with shrubbery and
a few large trees, especially on the eastern side. This is also a prime
spot for a 'Welcome to the Don Diego Neighborhood' sign.
[ Note: the plan
envisions several signs at key gateway streets. They will
psychologically announce / reinforce the "non-through-traffic
neighborhood quality" physical changes.]
After entering, the south
curb of Marquez will smoothly arch up till the curb-to-curb width is 22'.
After this width has been reached, there is parallel parking on the south
side.
There is no parking on the north side of Marquez at this point. The
arching curb and no parking is to facilitate big-truck/van entry as they
enter Marquez and move east to loading docks and delivery entrances.
